Risks and countermeasures when holding a live corporate event ~Report of Webinar by an infectious disease specialist~

This material is created based on information from the following webinar: “Considerations for a live corporate event during COVID-19, with Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Mizuno," held on December 9, 2020, hosted by JTB Communication Design, Inc.

About 60% of the domestic corporate meetings & events held by JCD (a sister company of JTB Global Marketing & Travel <GMT> which handles inbound corporate MICE business to Japan.) have been canceled since April 2020 due to the pandemic.

The value of holding live meetings & events:
・ “Sense of Memory”, referring to all the information gathered by the five senses.
・ "Creative power" that spreads through open communication
・ "Fostering a sense of unity" to advance towards a goal
・ "Impressive power" created by sharing energy and experience

We believe that only live events are able to offer all the four elements above. How can we hold live corporate meetings & events that give people a valuable experience even during COVID-19?
This is a report on a webinar to solve these questions by asking an infectious disease specialist about risks and precautions.

What needs to be considered when holding a live corporate event during the pandemic with Infectious Disease specialist Dr. Mizuno

December 9, 2020
JTB Communication Design, Inc.

Yasutaka Mizuno, MD., PhD.
Director of Global Healthcare Clinic, Doctor of Medicine,
Japan Society for Infectious Diseases Instructor/Counselor, Infectious Disease Specialist, Japan Pediatric Society Specialist.
Dr. Mizuno has acquired clinical experience in infectious disease internal medicine at university hospitals and the National Center for Global Health and Medicine. He then practiced health management for overseas travelers, making use of his experience studying abroad in Thailand and his last international doctor post in Vietnam. He also continues to comment and disseminate information based on his experience and research achievements during COVID-19, while often appearing in the media.

According to Dr. Mizuno, the virus has two main transmission routes : droplet infection and contact infection. Droplet infections are more likely to occur in conversation, and talking loudly increases the risk. Contact infection occurs when the virus enters the body through the eyes, nose, mouth, etc., when the face is touched with virus-bearing hands.
The key points to preventing infection are "wearing a mask", and "disinfecting and washing hands thoroughly". The risk of both contact infection and droplet infection can be suppressed if such measures are taken.

A crowded train is a good example. In a train, the risk of contact infection may be higher due to crowding, but in Japan, no clusters have occurred so far. The reason is that many people wear masks and do not engage in conversation once on the train.

What are the risks and specific countermeasures when holding live corporate meetings & events?

Dr. Mizuno also explained the risks lurking when holding meetings & events, and discussed the countermeasures. By looking at individual situations taking place during an event, you can discover what kind of risk is lurking at what time, making it easier to take countermeasures. For more information on possible risks and their countermeasures during an event, feel free to download our whitepaper here.
